Q+A: Depression + Identity Crisis

Written by: Chereen

Dear Chereen,

When depression dims your bright personality, how do you overcome the identity crisis?

Regards,

A

Dear Friend,

Look my dear, depression is no joke. I might be a therapist, but that doesn’t mean I’m immune to depression. I dealt with depression and I know how intensely it can consume you.

But as an average person and not as a counselor, I want you to know that every small step counts as progress. This includes remembering to breathe, then taking deeper breaths, even washing your face in the morning, and making an effort to communicate with others.

All of it counts and all of it matters.

When you feel like you’re suffering from an identity crisis because of your depression, then it might be time to reach out to someone. It could be helpful to open up about your struggles and to see a counselor or psychologist that can better help you help yourself.

Remember that you don’t have to struggle alone.

And please remember that the small steps matter the most.

Sincerely,

Chereen
