Q+A: Friendship

Written by: Chereen

Q: As salamu alaikkum sister,

I don’t share a lot with others; so how can that type of person maintain friendship or have best-friends?

A: Wa Alaykum Assalam dear,

You don’t necessarily have to constantly share in order to develop a friendship. That’s not what friendships are built from.

They’re based upon things like honesty, kindness, trust, communication, loyalty, and being understanding.

Share what you feel comfortable enough to share, sometimes it takes time to open up to others and that’s okay. You don’t have to spill your whole life to gain a friendship. If that’s the kind of expectations people you have met have of you, then it might help to make new friends.

Your comfort level and happiness is equally important, even if it means the friendship will take time to blossom.
